How do we know if it's an AR?

Can someone help me understand what really makes a gun an AR? I'm looking for a trigger that's specifically compatible with an AR lower. The thing is, a lot of guns look pretty similar when you check out the upper and lower halves. How can I tell if I'm looking at a genuine AR lower or something else entirely? I really need to get this sorted out before I buy! (I’m already aware of the barrel length requirements; they mentioned a minimum of 12")

For me, the upper isn't that a bit of a concern. What's important is I have a solid AR lower, I can easily replace uppers, triggers, and most other parts later without any worries about them fitting together.

"Genuine" AR. There are dozens of manufacturers producing AR lowers to standard specs. There are also dozens of firearms that use the AR FCG. It sounds like you are looking for an AR FCG. There are probably hundreds to choose from. I have no idea what the barrel length has to do with the lower. Also Maryland banned enhanced trigger years ago.
