Planning a trip to visit family and trying to figure out the best route. Bringing a firearm is throwing a wrench into my plans, especially with New York in the mix. I really want to avoid any trouble there, but skipping NY adds a crazy amount of time to the drive. I'm curious if anyone else has faced this situation. What did you end up doing? I’m open to suggestions if there’s a good way to navigate this.

Transport according to FOPA. Cased, Unloaded, Separate from ammo. Don't answer questions and never consent to searches.

Yeah, that's tricky, New York's gun laws are super strict. I've rerouted around the state before to stay legal, even if it adds time. Have you looked into if your carry permit or a locked case setup would work legally through NY?

When I'm passing through a state that doesn't recognize one of my permits, I follow the FOPA rules and drive very carefully. I put the unloaded firearm in a portable safe or my truck tool box that would require a search warrant to open. As John says above, don't consent to searches and don't answer questions unrelated to the stop.

When traveling, I keep a small safe in my vehicle that is cable-locked to the vehicle framework for those brief times I cannot carry but cannot secure the gun at home. Examples would be going into an out of state post office or going to a restaurant that serves alcohol in certain states where my permit is not valid if I go into an establishment that serves alcohol. I can simply drop the holstered gun in the safe without having to manipulate (unload/load) it in a public place. The portable safe is also handy for keeping any extra cash off my person while on the road.
