What shotgun works best for home defense?

I've been considering a shotgun for home defense and could use some input from those with experience. I'm stuck between a 12-gauge and a 20-gauge. The 12-gauge definitely packs a punch, but I've heard the 20-gauge is easier to manage with less recoil, especially in tight spaces. What do you all think?

When it comes to barrel length, stock types, or specific features, what's most important for a home defense shotgun? Looking for something straightforward and reliable. Any specific models or brands that you've liked?

Also, how crucial is training? I've messed around with shotguns, but nothing extensive. What do you suggest for practice to really feel ready?

Training is essential if you have never handled a firearm with intent. You don't want to be a hazard to yourself and your loved ones and neighbors. IF you will be holding up behind a closed door the configuration doesn't matter much. IF you have any possibility of "Clearing" then Retention is important. That's why I prefer a pistol grip with a folding stock or a bullpup configuration.
You can always dryfire and Practice with an Airsoft even in your house. I also consider a light essential on anything that could be used for HD.

There are also reduced recoil loads available for the 12ga. A pump tends to be the most reliable for most users especially with the reduced recoil loads. Most people are absolutely delusional about their firearm's and their own capabilities. You still have to be proficient with a shotgun to be effective. A load of buckshot will not shred a room at 10'. Honestly for most people a Pistol Caliber Carbine is a far better choice. Low recoil, almost hearing safe and potentially higher capacity. As I mentioned Retention is important. It doesn't help if it's taken away and used on you. Training and Drilling the skills into Muscle Memory are what will save you and your family if they are ever needed!!!
